In Tanya Akhmetgaliyeva’s video “A Day Full of Hope” a monotonous rotation of the carousel is rhythmically segmented into montage sequences, each uniquely colored, giving rise to an immersive effect that plunges the viewer into a spiraling centrifugal whirl of motion. While carousels are typically associated with centrifugal motion (who hasn’t yearned to ride a wooden horse or a tin rocket beyond the circle’s confines!), the artist subverts this logic. In an introspective video that immerses the audience in a sensation of inexorable, almost nauseating rotation, Akhmetgaliyeva continues her experiments with moving imagery, drawing the viewer into her currents.

Amid the dematerialization of the objective world, the artist achieves a palpable sense of experience. Notably, she concurrently engages with textile collages, where threads extending into three-dimensional space symbolize imperceptible connections between individuals, submerging them into their own selves. “I’m aware that the viewer might feel apprehensive. However, my intention isn’t to frighten anyone; it simply happens,” confesses the artist.
